2009 Archeo Nero d’Avola – Wine Wednesday


This week’s pick is from Sicily, the island off the southern coast of Italy.  We picked up this little gem from Trader Joe’s.  In fact, we have been buying it for the last five years or so.  We just keep coming back.  I tried as hard as I could to find out about the winery and found nothing.  The only think that I found was that it was imported by D’Aquino.  But, when I went on there site, I could find no info.
Nero d’Avola is the main red grape grown in Sicily.  It’s generally dense and jammy with dark red fruits.  If you like Syrah, you might be a fan of Nero d’Avola.  However, this wine can run the gamut.  The Archeo version is a very light version of Nero d’Avola.  If it were a little lighter, it would be a borderline rose.  However, the Archeo is highly drinkable and enjoyable.  It’s an affordable every day wine!  Salute!

60 Minute IPA- 60 Minute IPA is continuously hopped – more than 60 hop additions over a 60-minute boil. (Getting a vibe of where the name came from?) 60 Minute is brewed with a slew of great Northwest hops. A powerful but balanced East Coast IPA with a lot of citrusy hop character.
90 Minute IPA- Esquire Magazine calls our 90 Minute IPA “perhaps the best IPA in America.” An imperial IPA best savored from a snifter, 90 Minute has a great malt backbone that stands up to the extreme hopping rate.90 Minute IPA was the first beer we continuously hopped, allowing for a pungent – but not crushing – hop flavor.
Burton Baton 2010 (Aged here at the Lionheart!)- we brew two “threads,” or batches, of beer: an English-style old ale and an imperial IPA. After fermenting the beers separately in our stainless tanks, they’re transferred and blended together in one of our large oak tanks. Burton Baton sits on the wood for about a month. You’ll find an awesome blend of the citrus notes from Northwestern hops melding with woody, vanilla notes from the oak. The wood also tends to mellow the 10% ABV of Burton, so tread cautiously!
Pearl Jam Faithfull Ale- Faithfull Ale is a celebration of Pearl Jam’s 20th anniversary as a band and its extraordinary debut album, “Ten.” In recognition of these milestones, this Belgian-style golden ale is delicately hopped to 20 IBUs and fruit-forward from 10 incremental additions of black currants over a one-hour boil. Faithfull clocks in at 7% ABV.
Namaste- A witbier bursting with good karma. Made with dried organic orange slices, fresh-cut lemongrass and a bit of coriander, this Belgian-style white beer is a great thirst quencher.Namaste was originally brewed at our pub in Rehoboth Beach with our Italian friend Leo from Birra del Borgo. It was a tribute to our friends at 3 Fonteinen brewery in Belgium, who had devastating production loss (1/3 of their annual production) in 2009.

My Antonia- My Antonia (named after the Willa Cather read), is a continually-hopped imperial pilsner. This lager for ale lovers is citrusy, sweet and refined. My Antonia started out as a collaboration beer when Sam brewed at the Italian brewery Birra del Borgo. 7.5% abv
Ta Henket- For this ambitious liquid time capsule, we used ingredients and traditions plucked from Egyptian hieroglyphics.Ta Henket is brewed with an ancient form of wheat and loaves of hearth-baked bread, and it’s flavored with chamomile, dom-palm fruit and Middle Eastern herbs. To ferment this earthy ancient ale, Sam and friends traveled to Cairo, set out baited petri dishes and captured a native Egyptian saccharomyces yeast strain. 4.5% abv
Olde School Barleywine- Bold, yet smooth! Fermented with dates and figs, this bone-crushing barleywine has a unique flavor.The concept for this beer came from an old cellerman’s manual Sam came across. At about 15% ABV, this beer is a great candidate for aging. Over time, the beer dries out and the pit fruit flavors come forward and the hops recede. Our recommendation? Grab a few bottles when you find it – enjoy one now, and age the others for a bit.
Aprihop- American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Crystal malts. It’s massively hopped – in the continuous fashion, of course! – and the flavor is complemented by the addition of apricots.After fermentation, the beer is dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Amarillo hops. The beer has a hoppy aroma, with the apricots playing a supporting role.The flavor is rich with late hop flavors, and its bitterness is tempered by just the right amount of malt sweetness and fruity undertones from the apricots 7% abv
Tweason’ale- we replaced the classic barley foundation of beer with a mild sorghum base. The hints of molasses and pit-fruit are balanced by vibrant strawberry notes and a unique complexity that comes with the addition of a malty buckwheat honey. We believe health-conscious beer drinkers and the millions of Americans who suffer from Celiac disease can cut back on gluten while relishing the distinction and drinkability of this very special brew 6% abv

The incredible television show, a Game of Thrones, returns.  There are burning questions to be answered.  Who will control the Seven Kingdoms?  Will Daenerys and her dragons cross the sea and return to the Seven Kingdoms?  Can anything top the Crown of Gold?  Can the imp control Joffrey?
If ever there were a show where the populace looked like it needed a stiff drink, then this is the one.  Life in medieval times was harsh.  Life in the Seven Kingdoms and in exile seems even harsher.  Booze could certainly help the characters as they forge their way with the watch at the wall where the winter scenes make me shiver, deal with the palace intrigue in the south that makes or wind their way through the tall grasses in blistering heat with the Dothraki.  To celebrate their return, we have selected drinks for some of our favorite characters.  Enjoy!

Daenerys – Dragon’s Blood Punch.  This is perfect to celebrate the possible ascension of Daenerys and her dragons and honor her dead husband and son.  Daenerys is going to be bad ass this year – After surviving a pyre of fire and emerging with three hatched dragons, she is a contender to the throne.
Cersei – Black Widow.  If anyone fits this description it’s Cersei.  Cersei wanted nothing more than to see her husband dead and her son ascend the throne.  Did we mention that her son was fathered by her lover, who is also her lover, and not her husband.
Joffrey – Blond Ambition.  A spoiled brat who let his own ambition and hatred get in the way when he executed Ned.  Now hated by his betrothed, whom he already despised, and the North.  The North has succeeded. 
Jon Snow – Connie’s Hot Buttered Rum.  It’s chilly in the North at the wall.  And scary to with the unknown lurking on the other side of the wall.  Jon and his cohorts should imbibe in some of Connie’s Hot Buttered Rum.
